Keep Your Food Fresh

Fresh Vegetables
Always Fresh

Foods give the perfect blend of nutrients, not to mention the vitamins and minerals as well. The nutrients in foods start to reduce as quickly as it is pulled out and continue to decline until the food is consumed. The quicker you eat the food, the lesser amount of possibility of nutrient loss. This is somehow true especially when you are living in a certain place where there is no chance of preserving the foods you have. But on the other hand, if we are in a place where the opportunity of storing our foods and keep its nutrients is within reach, then we should know how to do it properly. And since most of us use to store up foods—here are some tips from some Nutritionist and food experts that can help us storing and or even selecting foods to preserve.

Food Selection

Choose only the freshest of produce: meats, fish and shellfish, poultry, fruits and vegetables. These foods are more likely the safest and these contain many nutrients. For these reasons, buy foods in season.
1. Beware of foods which have abnormal discoloration (e.g. greenish-gray spots in meats, or darkened spots in fruits and vegetables).
2. Do not buy wilted and even partially decayed fruits and vegetables.
3. In choosing vegetables, one rule-of-thumb help: The Darker The Color, The more the Nutrients. This is especially true for yellow fruits and green leafy vegetables.
4. Never buy cut-up vegetables wrapped in plastic and sold in the market. These have minimal nutrients left.
5. In buying meats, more protein per unit weight is found in lean meats than in fatty and bone -rich parts.
6. Be aware of canned foods' expiration dates. Do not use such products with signs of leakage and gas information.

Food Storage

1. Meats, fish and poultry should always be stored in the freezer.
2. Vegetables are stored in freezer.
3. Vegetables are not supposed to be stored for long, except for those such as potatoes and other root crops.
4. Some vegetables like beans and carrots can be blanched then kept in the freezer.
