Eating Tips For Patients With Cancer

Taking the appropriate diet for most patients with cancer has become a challenge. We know that most cancer treatments come with side effects and one of those negative effects is the loss of appetite. Boosting appetite is boosting one's chances of survival, health experts say.

The National Cancer Institute published a booklet, "Eating Hints for Cancer Patients Before, During and After Treatment," which offers some diet tips for cancer patients :

* Patients should always keep snacks whenever they feel like it. Food rich in carbohydrates assist in releasing the needed energy to sustain the body, since most patients experience nausea and vomiting during treatment.

* Water is essential to the body's proper functioning. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may reduce the flow of saliva and cause dry mouth. To deal with this, cancer patients can have a sip of water every few minutes to help them swallow and talk more easily.

* Food presentation or presenting food or meals into a more appetizing will help stimulate the patients appetite.
