Disinfectant of our Body

July 14th 2009 07:49
As I’m doing my daily reading and research of different types of minerals that our body is needed, I found out that Chlorine is also a mineral that is useful to us. It exists in the form of a salt (chloride) in the human body. It is present mostly in the extracellular fluid.

Mostly present in our body as sodium chloride or common salt as they say, which perform various essential functions. Here are some essentials of Chlorine as chloride in our body:

• Help for the proper distribution of carbon dioxide and the maintenance of osmotic pressure in the tissues.
• Needed for the manufacture of glandular hormone secretions.

• Prevents the building of excessive fat and autointoxication.
• Regulates the alkali-acid balance in the blood.
• Works with potassium in a compound form, so it becomes potassium chloride.
• As potassium chloride, it becomes responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which is essential for proper protein digestion.
• Also involved in the maintenance of proper fluid and electrolyte balance in the system.

Lack of chloride can occur when sodium chloride is restricted during the active phase of general oedema or hypertension. Excessive loss of salt from the body due to perspiration can result in heat cramps. Also deficiency may lead to loss of hair and teeth. It may also result in impaired digestion of foods and derangement of fluid levels in the body.

Another used of Chlorine that is also beneficial to human being—it’s used in disinfecting water for drinking. It is also used in swimming pools. Taken the form of eusol which contains hypochlorus acid, chlorine is used to disinfect chronic ulcers, but this usage is limited because its action is stopped by the presence of excessive organic matter.

There are some things that need to be aware of in chlorine. The fumes of chlorine are poisonous. After a patient has apparently recovered from exposure to chlorine gas, he may develop lung hypertension and become seriously ill. In such as case the appropriate treatment is administration of oxygen.
