Big Daddy….Big Belly!
Proud of your big belly? Being a body double for King Henry VIII increases the risk of diabetes and other diseases.
According to many dietitians, even if we’re aware that our waistline isn’t as trim as it could be, the average man most likely assumes there’s no harm in a bit of extra padding. But in fact an outsize waist is believed to be a better indicator of health risk than knowing your body mass index.
Dr Colin Waine, chairman of the UK’s Obesity Forum says: “Measuring BMI doesn’t tell you about the distribution of fat, which is important when it comes to expanding waistlines, especially in men.” This is because the high insulin and blood sugar levels, caused by abdominal fat-releasing hormones, push up blood fat levels, increasing the risk of major health problems. The NOF would like to see waist measurement given the importance as routine blood pressure checks.
Again according to some health experts there are a number of factors involved in cultivating a super sized belly. Two interrelated—the more you spend time in the cafe and drinking, the more calories you’ll consume. By the same token, if you lead a lifestyle in which you regularly dine out or go to parties, you’re probably not getting enough exercise either. Propping yourself on a chair and chatting doesn’t burn many calories. Like wise, watching TV is a sure way of cultivating a paunch—the only exercise you’re likely to get is a stagger to the fridge to top-up with food again. That’s not to say you should stop going out. I think we just need to balance it with regular exercise and always careful with what we eat and drink.
